Brookline is a suburban town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, on the western edge of Boston and east of Newton. Brookline was first settled in 1638 as a hamlet in Boston, but was incorporated as a separate town in 1705. The total area of town is 6.8 sq mi (17.7 km2). As of the 2010 census, the population of the town was 58,732, among which 73.3% were whites and 15.6% were Asians. The median age of the population is 34. For population 25 years and over in Brookline, 76.9% has a bachelor’s degree or higher and 45.3% has a graduate or professional degree. The most common occupations for male are Computer specialists (9%), Physicians and surgeons (9%), other management occupations except farmers and farm managers (7%), Postsecondary teachers (6%), Business operations specialists (5%), Lawyers (4%) and Life and physical scientists (4%).

The median household income in Brookline in 2009 was $92,153, and the median per capita income in 2009 was $61,089. 21% of Brookline families had an annual income above $200,000, and 9% of families had an annual income between $150,000 and $200,000. The estimated median house or condo value in 2009 was $629,817. The criminal index in 2009 Brookline was 122.7 (U.S. average: 319.1).

The town is served by the Public Schools of Brookline. The student body at Brookline High School includes students from more than 50 countries. Many students attend Brookline High from surrounding neighborhoods in Boston such as Mission Hill and Mattapan through the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) system.

The system includes one early learning center, eight grades K-8 schools, and one comprehensive high school. The student body is 57.8% White, 18.2% Asian, 6.7% Black, 9.6% Hispanic, and 7.6% Multi-race. Approximately 30% of students come from homes where English is not the first language.

According to the Massachusetts high school ranking conducted by Boston Magazine, Brookline High School was ranked 15th within Massachusetts in 2012. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Brookline High School is 50 percent.
