Belmont is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. Belmont was founded on March 18, 1859, with a total area of 4.7 sq mi (12.2 km2).The population was 24,729 at the 2010 United States Census, among which 81.4% were whites and 11% were Asians. The median age of the population is 41.5. For population 25 years and over in Belmont, 63.1% has a bachelor’s degree or higher and 36.7% has a graduate or professional degree. The most common occupations for male are computer specialists (9%) , other management occupations except farmers and farm managers (7%) , top executives (6%) , lawyers (5%) and postsecondary teachers (5%).

The median household income in Belmont in 2009 was $96,706, and the median per capita income in 2009 was $53,418. The median Asian household income in Belmont was $89,202 in 2009. 16% of Belmont families had an annual income above $200,000, and 12% of families had an annual income between $150,000 to $200,000. The estimated median house or condo value in 2009 was $597,717. The criminal index in 2009 Belmont was 126.2 (U.S. average: 319.1), which was pretty low.

There are four public elementary schools in Belmont, the Mary Lee Burbank, Daniel Butler, Winn Brook, and Roger Wellington schools. According to the Massachusetts high school ranking conducted by Boston Magazine, Belmont High School was ranked 12th within Massachusetts in 2012. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Belmont High School is 74 percent.

Belmont is served directly by two state routes. Running close to the middle of town is Route 60, locally known as Pleasant Street. On the northern border, Route 2 predominantly outlines Belmont’s boundary with the neighboring town of Arlington.
